Boosting Immunity

What is the problem?

Your immune system is your bodies defence system against foreign bodies that might do it harm. There's plenty of opportunistic bacteria, viruses and parasites that exist within our environment that we're exposed to every day.

Often we "feel" that a bug or germ has caused an infection, when in reality, it is a weak immune system that hasn't been able to fight off the attack, and so we succumb to a disease or ailment. The key to good health is maintaining a strong immune system. In modern society almost everyone needs to boost their immune system.

The natural state for the body is health and it will always try to "heal" any imbalances, just like a broken bone will start healing straight away. You need to feed your body to maintain and boost this immune system, so that proper healing and protection can take place. The immune system consists of the lymph system and lymph nodes, the thymus gland, and the specialty cells that detect and destroy harmful microbes.

I help you solve this in two ways - # 1

  • Decrease Foods that Depress the Immune System:
Sugars, processed foods, white flour, and white flour products (bagels, muffins, pasta etc). High fat foods and sodas.

  • Increase Foods that Boost the Immune System:
Green drinks, garlic, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains including pearl barley. Focus on other specific immunity boosting foods mentioned in Staying Alive! Cookbook for Cancer Free Living. www.stayingalivecookbook.com

  • Herbs for Immunity:
Astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, bayberry, fenugreek, hawthorn, licorice root and red clover all enhance the immune response. Herbs are powerful medicines. Do not use herbal remedies without supervision and recommendations from a Master or Clinical Herbalist.

  • Exercises for Immunity:
Any daily exercise can benefit the immune system. Muscular contractions help the flow of lymph around the body, which results in drainage of waste from the immune system. Even deep breathing exercises can help in this regard. Walking, swimming, or any activity you enjoy, done on a daily basis can help boost immunity.
An age-old trick is to "wake up" your thymus gland. Tap gently around your sternum area (Between your breasts and throat).

  • Attitude Adjustment:
Through the science known as Psycho-neuro-immunology, we are beginning to understand that our thoughts can contribute to, or alleviate disease (first seen in the placebo effect.) A positive attitude can increase your immunity, and stress management is also key, as stress will also depress the immune response making us more susceptible to disease. Meditation, creative expression, adopting more upbeat thoughts and laughing more frequently are some fun, cheap and easy ways to boost your immunity.

"Optimists have healthier immune systems, are not as adversely affected by stress, and suffer half the number of infectious diseases as pessimists."

Learned Optimism, Random House, Sydney, 1994 p 175
